Restaurant operator Groupe Chez Gérard is to scale down its programme of regional openings following after disappointing trading in Manchester and a downturn in tourism. The group has also issued a warning that the tourism downturn caused by the slowing US economy and the foot and mouth crisis, will reduce estimated annual profits from £2.7m to £2m in the year to 1 July. In a trading statement, the group said that 'management action has been taken' following particularly poor trading after a strong start in Manchester, and a drop in bookings for restaurant and theatre packages. The group will now scale down regional openings over the next year from 12 to six Chez Gérard and Livebait sites. Next month sites open in Oxford and Birmingham.
