The first UK trial of back-packer waiters - equipped to re-fill glasses at drinkers' tables, has been launched by Bass Brewers at high turnover events. Waiters with 'rocket man' backpack beer containers and hand held hoses are able to circulate among crowds topping up glasses on demand. The mobile beer server, designed to satisfy thirsty customers at entertainment and sporting events, is perfect for bars under pressure at key times, says Bass' national account manager, Mark Cockrell: It's early days but we feel the concept is tailor-made for big events where large numbers of drinkers congregate. The 'rocket man' has made a debut appearance at the Millhouse pub at Stretton near Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The Millhouse used the back-pack, which holds about 22 pints, to dispense ice-cold lager. Millhouse co-manager, Russell Mills says the idea proved a popular attraction, especially in high temperatures: We got very busy during the recent hot spell and the appearance of the 'rocket man' in mid-afternoon helped relieve pressure on our over-worked bar staff. Bass says the initial trial showed that the beer back-packer waiter could be ideal for events attracting large crowds.
