Visitor numbers soared early this month on the first weekend of free access to many museums across England. Many, such as the Science Museum, reported a doubling of visitor numbers and some, such as the Museum of London, enjoyed a fivefold increase. Galleries and museums sponsored by the DCMS will receive an extra £10m to cover the shortfall in income. Extra wardens may be needed to cope with increased numbers and unavoidable items as extra toilet paper add to maintenance bills. However, visitors enjoying free access are reportedly happier about paying for extra facilities, such as children using simulators at the Science Museum.
