Building work has got underway on a £2,6m sports hall and community centre in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The centre is being built on land to the rear of the area's existing leisure centre and will incorporate the existing swimming pool. New facilities include sports halls, an enlarged swimming pool viewing area, changing facilities, a health and fitness suite and three squash courts. The total cost of the centre will be in the region of £2.6m with £1.5m donated by Sport England and a further £1m from Derbyshire Dales Council. Completion is expected at the end of 2002.
