The Aquarium of the Lakes is to start work this month on a £600,000 re-development programme, including a new audio-visual theatre and a redesigned otter enclosure. According to marketing manager Cathy Burrows, the re-development programme is designed to keep pace with the 'growing popularity' of the Newby Bridge attraction and to offer a 'new experience' to regular visitors. The re-theming programme has the aim of incorporating a more realistic environment for creatures in the aquarium. The otter enclosure, for example, will become a series of underground tunnels. We will be installing high-tech plasma screens in a number of displays as well as special interactive pods which will encourage a much more hands-on approach by visitors, said Cathy Burrows. Visitors will also be treated to a weather show, with a simulated walk above Lake Windermere, experiencing the sudden changes in weather that occur in the Lake District. The attraction is due to re-open in early January.
