Sewerage levels classed as acceptable are making people ill, according to a report prepared for the United Nations. The report says standards in the US and Europe are failing to protect swimmers properly; diseases and infections among bathers rise in step with the amount of sewage in the water. A World Health Organisation report estimated that one bather in 20 in waters defined as acceptable would become ill after going into the sea just once.
