A new standard for playing fields has been launched by the National Playing Fields Association (NPFA). The Six Acre standard is expressed as a minimum of six acres for 1000 people; four acres allocated to sport and two acres for children's play. The recommendations include a framework for research, to enable local authorities to adopt their own standards and information on gradients, drainage, orientation of pitches and changing accommodation. Whether assessing community playing pitch requirements, preparing a recreation strategy, designing a new housing development or drafting policies for a development plan, this document will be the guiding tool. It is a national standard with the flexibility to meet local needs, said Alison Moore-Gwyn, NPFA chair. Copies of The Six Acre Standard available from the NPFA @ £45 per copy.
