The Victoria & Albert Museum has benefited from a £300,000 Art Fund grant towards the purchase of a rare statue from a private collection at Luton Hoo. The 15th century Wehner Reliquary is a figure of St Sebastian dating to 1497, which in the Middle Ages was thought to protect the beholder from the plague. David Barrie, director of the Art Fund said of the £1.5m statue: We're very glad once again to have played a part in helping an outstanding work from Luton Hoo find a permanent home in a British public collection. Further funding came from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
