New figures released by the Society of London Theatre (Solt) have revealed that audiences at West End theatres have defied the expected detrimental impact of foot and mouth. Audience figures rose by 7 per cent increase on the April - June period in the previous year. The research was carried out using box office figures from over 50 of the major commercial theatres in London and allays fears that the foot and mouth epidemic would seriously damage the London theatre industry. A succession of stars, such as Martine McCutcheon, Denise Van Outen and Jerry Hall, who have taken roles in West End shows, may well have contributed to the increase, which is constituted of roughly one third overseas visitors, one third London based and one third domestic visitors. Christina Hicks, development manager at Solt said the figures although pleasing were not entirely unexpected: We've been getting fairly positive feedback from theatres for some time. There hasn't been the crisis that was expected.
