The long-term effects of foot and mouth on the leisure industry have been highlighted once again with a 14 per cent drop in overseas visitors to Britain in June. The figures from the Office for National Statistics, show that 862,000 foreign tourists came to Britain in June compared with 996,000 for the year before. The figures are worse than the 9 per cent drop seen for figures in May. The British Tourist Authority (BTA) says it is still too early to evaluate the full extent of losses caused by foot and mouth, but that the July-September figures will be critical for inbound tourism, as a third of all visitors come to Britain during those months. The BTA is optimistic that next year's Golden Jubilee celebrations 'enhance the prospects for recovery'.
