Peter Moore, the man responsible for the success of Alton Towers and Center Parcs, has been given the task of transforming Blackpool into a world-class tourist resort. In his new role as chairman of the Masterplan Project Team, Moore will be responsible for developing a new vision for the seaside town which currently suffers severe economic problems. Dubbed the Tourism Tsar by former Tourism Minister Janet Anderson, and awarded the OBE for his services to the leisure industry, Moore says regeneration of the town is crucial: There is a critical, urgent need for change. It has to happen otherwise Blackpool, and resorts like it, are going to die. They simply won't make it. Resort casinos will play a big part in the vision, but not all, says Moore: My job is to look at regeneration in the round. The resort needs a sense of identity, something distinctive, something that sets it apart. Something that demands it takes centre stage as world resort. Believe me, Blackpool is poised to make resort history.
