Too many hotels in the UK focus on fripperies rather than getting the basics right says the Which Hotel Guide 2002. A chocolate on the pillow may be very nice, but does not make up for uncomfortable rooms, poor service or bad food. The annual guide of hotels, B&Bs, farmhouses and restaurants-with-rooms also complains of the price of British hotels - among the most expensive in Europe - and particularly the extra charges. If a hotel is going to add a compulsory 10 per cent service charge, why not include it in the room price? asks co-editor of the guide, Kim Winter. Isn't the service part and parcel of staying in the hotel?
