The future of the Dog of Alcibiades, the Roman marble sculpture of a Greek Molossian dog at the British Museum, is secure thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The grant of £362,000 was made following the recent £100,000 donation from the National Arts Collections Fund which brought the funds raised to almost the halfway. This latest donation means that the three foot sculpture dating from the 2nd century AD will stay in Britain where it has been for almost 250 years. The Arts Minister had placed a bar on the statue's export until 26 November, due to its 'outstanding aesthetic quality.'
