Bookmakers have reported a significant increase in the number of bets being placed since the abolition of betting taxes. There was a surge of wagers placing bets on the World Cup qualifying game between England and Greece last Saturday as customers took advantage of the first tax-free betting since 1966. Government abolished tax on all bets in favour of 15 per cent tax on bookmakers' profits to persuade bookmakers to shut down offshore Internet betting, which is costing the exchequer millions of pounds each year.
