British Airways is to axe 5,800 jobs, cut routes and lower fares in order to combat losses, after a fall in passenger numbers. Ten routes will be cut (details are yet to be released), but the number of BA aircraft will be reduced to 305 by mid-2003, from 354 last summer. The carrier is also from June to cut fares on short haul European routes in an effort to boost passenger numbers. BA admits that the decision to lower fares on short haul European flights was prompted by competition from low-cost airlines, which have thrived despite the tourism downturn since the 11 September terrorist attacks. The company says it will also offer the lowest fares to passengers who book online. Operational focus is being accelerated at Heathrow, transferring a further eight routes from Gatwick.
