Sheffield's City Museum and Mappin Art Gallery are embarking on stage two of their £15m refurbishment plans. Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust received stage one approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for its plans to refurbish the adjoining Victorian buildings earlier this year. The HLF earmarked £11.5m for the scheme, and awarded £444,000 to develop extensive plans for stage two submission. The trust plans to create a vibrant, family-friendly centre for discovery and learning from the two museums with interactive exhibits. The plans also include reforming the museums to their former Victorian glory. The stage two plans will be submitted to the HLF in summer 2002 and if approved, the museums will be closed from March 2003 to Spring 2005 for refurbishment.
