A Healthy Living Centre for Netherthorpe and Upperthorpe in Sheffield has been opened today by Sports Minister and MP for Sheffield, Richard Caborn. The £3.9m project, which received a £1m donation from the National Lottery New Opportunities Fund, aims to provide refurbished facilities and develop a range of new sport and health-related activities and services which will improve the health and lifestyle of the people in the area. Some of the schemes that will be offered include a young people's advice service and writing, reading and drama workshops. Many of the activities on offer will be free of charge. I believe that everyone should have the chance to enjoy the benefits of sport, and congratulate the New Opportunities Fund for their commitment to widening access to sport and other health-related activities, said Richard Caborn. The New Opportunities Fund distributes National Lottery money to health, educational and environmental projects across the UK. It has allocated £300m towards creating a core of Healthy Living Centres across the UK, and 137 grants have so far been awarded.
