The Science Museum is planning a £75m redevelopment of its South Kensington site in a rolling improvement project which could last 10 years. Under proposal is the creation of several major new galleries, the expansion of the popular activity areas for younger children and an increase in public space. The museum is also proposing to increase its temporary exhibition space for touring exhibitions, extend its opening hours and create a Great Court with cafés, bars and a vastly increased retail space. The revamp will also allow the museum to put more of its collections on public display. The redevelopment is seen as fundamental to the continuing success of the museum. 'It's a long-term look at how we can meet our obligations to science, society, government, schools, business and staff in the best way for the future,' said Dr Lindsay Sharp, the museum's director. The plans have been submitted to the museum's directors and trustees and are under review.
