Milan's La Scala opera house will close this month is to undergo a major three-year, £35m refurbishment. After more than 200 years at the 1,800-seat city centre opera house, built towards the end of the 18th century, the company will move to a newly-built theatre, the 2,400-seat Teatro degli Arcimboldi in the Milan suburbs while the renovations take place. La Scala's face-lift will include complete overhaul of the technical layout of the stage, expansion of behind-the-scenes space and changes to the seating, but the building itself will be unaffected. The renovated opera house is scheduled to re-open on 7 December 2004.
