Grand Hyatt Macau opens its doors
POSTED 20 Oct 2009 . BY Martin Nash
Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has opened the Grand Hyatt Macau on the territory's Cotai Strip in the new City of Dreams development.

The 791-guestroom hotel houses one of the largest event spaces in Macau and, with 15 individual function areas spanning more than 968,000sq ft (90,000sq m), Hyatt sees the hotel as becoming the leading MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) venue in the region.

The 424 rooms and suites in the Grand Tower and 367 rooms and suites in the premium Grand Club Tower - each tower featuring dedicated check-in areas - provide views of either the Pearl River or the Cotai. Photographic art of Macau is featured in Grand Tower rooms, while original artwork inspired by nature and created by an Australian artist is a characteristic of the Grand Club Tower rooms.

Room facilities include bedside lighting and curtain controls, plus an AV control panel transmitting iPod, camera and laptop data through two 40in LCD TVs.

Level 35 of the Grand Club Tower is home to the Chairman's Suite - a 2,960sq ft (275sq m) private two bedroom, two bathroom residential-style guestroom with panoramic city views, offering a security-monitored entrance, a kitchen with seating, a dining area, a work space, and a home theatre sound system. It also features a separate entertainment quarter.

Taking up the entire ground floor of the Grand Club Tower is the Grand Club Lounge, designed for the exclusive use of Grand Club guests. A 250-seat restaurant with a bar and open kitchen offers complimentary full buffet breakfast, all day light refreshments and evening cocktails and canapés, plus the option of dining on a private outdoor terrace. There is also a library and two dedicated boardrooms for Grand Club guests' free use.

The second level of the hotel is dedicated to event space, with the pillar-less Grand Ballroom boasting a 26ft-high (8m) ceiling, covering more than 23,000sq ft (2,136 sq m) and catering up to 2,500 guests in theatre-style and 1,500 for a banquet function. Divisible into four soundproof sections, each with its own control room, the ballroom features catwalk lighting and six built-in projectors.

The hotel's 7,500sq ft (697sq m) Salão do Teatro is the first event space in Macau to feature an open show kitchen capable of accommodating up to 50 chefs at a time. There are eight additional salons that function as meeting venues, which can accommodate from 40 to 120 guests. The Pool Deck and the adjacent Poolside on Level 3 are suited for more informal events, the Pool Deck reported to be the largest outdoor event venue in Macau and featuring a water lounge, eight private VIP cabanas and landscaped gardens.

For its two main restaurants, Beijing Kitchen on Level 1 replicates the successful format of Grand Hyatt Beijing's Made in China restaurant, and is one of the signature restaurants of the City of Dreams resort. Open 24 hours, the 225-seat restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining and specialises in authentic Northern Chinese fare augmented by western elements such as wine, coffee, and desserts.

mezza9 Macau on Level 3 is inspired by the mezza9 at Grand Hyatt Singapore. With a focus on Southeast Asian fare with an international influence, it offers nine different dining experiences: Macanese, grill, sushi and sashimi, wok, delicatessen, steam basket, patisserie, bar and cellar.

In the Lobby Lounge is a wine and champagne bar featuring live music accompanied by traditional Chinese instruments. In the main lobby is a coffee bar and patisserie, which specialises in traditional Portuguese egg tarts.

The hotel has a fitness centre and studio overlooking the lap pool and features TechnoGym cardio and resistance kit, equipped with LCD screens offering cable TV and music.

Spa provision is offered by Isala Spa, spread over 25,000sq ft (2,323sq m) and including 15 spa suites, six of them designed for couples. There are also whirlpools, steam rooms and freeze showers, plus a dedicated foot massage room. Isala Spa's signature treatments combine the healing traditions of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with proven aesthetic treatments. Therapists and certified TCM practitioners utilise high quality products made with local Macanese ingredients, alongside products exclusive to Isala Spa.

With its opening, the Grand Hyatt Macau becomes the fifth Hyatt hotel in the area, joining the Park Hyatt Shanghai, Park Hyatt Beijing, Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Sha Tin and Hyatt Regency Hong Kong Tsim Sha Tsui, which opened earlier in October this year.
