Spelthorne play schemes beat funding axe
POSTED 07 Sep 2010 . BY Pete Hayman
Spelthorne Borough Council (SBC) has revealed that it managed to spend its full allocation of Playbuilder funding before the coalition government decided to axe the scheme.

Surrey County Council - along with 11 borough and district authorities - were successful in securing £1.1m to create or refurbish 22 play areas as part of the initiative, with £100,000 allocated to each of the 11 authorities.

SBC said that it used its funding allocation to create a new adventure facility at Stanwell Moor Recreation Ground and to renovate an existing site at Nuthatch Close, Stanwell, at the end of last year.

Denise Grant, SBC's cabinet member for young people and culture, said: "I'm extremely pleased that we managed to make full use of the Playbuilder funding which has enabled us to provide new and improved play facilities for the young people of Stanwell.

"It's very disappointing that the other Surrey authorities, with the exception of Tandridge Council, have lost their funding."
