Is Universal planning to build a new theme park on Orlando's I-Drive?

Universal is remaining tight-lipped over plans to possibly develop a new theme park on more than 474-acres (1.91sq km) of land in Orlando.

The company – which owns Universal Orlando, Islands of Adventure, Wet ’n Wild Orlando and the upcoming Sapphire Falls Resort and Volcano Bay waterpark in the attractions capital of the world – has been rumoured to have interest in the Sand Lake Road complex near Universal Boulevard. The whispers were given more substance after county commissioners confirmed they had discussions with Universal.

Commissioners Ted Edwards and Pete Clarke said at a meeting of the Orange County Commission, that Universal lobbyist and new IAAPA chair, John McReynolds had contacted them about the property, which the operator has the option to buy from Santa Monica-based private equity firm Colony Capital.

When AM2 contacted Universal, the company declined to comment on the potential land purchase or the rumours of a new theme park development, however the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the company has already made an offer for the land – the largest undeveloped area along the I-Drive tourism corridor – which it would purchase with one lump sum. The land purchase would also open up the possibility for new restaurants, retail and hotels from Universal.

Also adding substance to the rumour is Universal’s strong opposition to the recently approved Skyplex, with the operator raising concerns for overall planning in the area and the impact of the towering rollercoaster in relation to Universal's expansion plans.

“The impression is whatever it is, it would be big,” said commissioner Edwards of Universal's plans during the Orange County Commission meeting. “It’s exciting.”
