Facebook breaks into sports with second-screen hub

Social media giant Facebook has launched into the sports market by creating a second-screen hub for televised sports matches.

Facebook Sports Stadium aggregates all content on the site related to the game a user is interested in. It brings together posts from friends related to the game; commentary from experts, teams and journalists; live scores and game information such as where to find the game on television.

Users can get to the Facebook Sports Stadium by searching for the game they are concerned with. They can then watch the game unfold with live play-by-play notifications, and have the opportunity to comment on, like and share individual plays.

Initially rolled out in the US for American football matches, the service will roll out to other countries and include other sports – basketball and football – in the coming weeks.

Facebook, which estimates that it has 650m sports fans signed up to its network, said the tool was a “second-screen experience that we hope makes watching the broadcast even better”.
