Newly-opened Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro features 17 Burle Marx-inspired vertical gardens
POSTED 01 Apr 2016 . BY Jane Kitchen
The hotel features 17 vertical gardens inspired by Brazilian icon and landscape architect Burle Marx
The 436-bedroom Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro has opened in Brazil, complete with a 1,150sq m (12,379sq ft) Atiaia Spa, named after the indigenous tupi-guarani word for luminosity.

The hotel features 17 vertical gardens inspired by Brazilian icon and landscape architect Burle Marx, as well as mosaic floors, also inspired by Burle Marx’s sideway designs, and local artwork.

“We created a hotel that honours our cultural surroundings and local ‘Carioca’ lifestyle infused with innovative design,” said Christophe Lorvo Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro general manager and area vice president, Hyatt.

Created by interior designer Yabu Pushelberg with local assistance from Brazilian design firm Anastassiadis Arquitetos, the hotel aims to have a relaxed, care-free coastal living experience, with large balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, along with stones and fabrics authentic to Brazil.

The Atiaia Spa features six single and three couples suites, all with private showers and changing areas. Specialty treatments use local techniques and native products, and the spa includes a relaxation lounge, steam rooms and an outdoor pool with wet deck.

Other wellness facilities include a movement studio that offers yoga and Brazilian dance classes as well as a 24-hour fitness centre.
