Design starts with a story. I think about the whole narrative. Other than the colours and superficial elements, it’s really about the sense of movement and how people feel when they are in the space
– André Fu
Interior designer Andre Fu has completed a restaurant by a lagoon for Grand Hyatt’s new Sanya resort in Hainan, China.

The design of the two-storey site, called Yu Cun, is inspired by the kitchens of the floating homes of the local Dan minority and creates a relaxed fine-dining experience. The layout includes three private dining rooms and eight private pavilions nestled along the lagoon.

The structures are formed of bronzed bamboo and are connected via winding paths and wooden bridges over the water. Inside, Fu has added bespoke straw pendants, Chinese cabinets, marble blocks and furnishings made from smoked oak and woven rattan.

Views of the resort and lagoon provide an authentic water village backdrop, and diners can choose from a food menu featuring local seafoods.

“It has been an exciting challenge to create an authentically intimate Chinese dining experience within the landscape of an incredible, plush lagoon,” said Fu. “We have designed a destination where diners will be able to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine whilst being emotionally transported to a bountiful fishing village set on the edge of a tropical rainforest.”

In an interview with CLAD earlier this year, Fu described his design process by saying “the whole thing starts with a story.”

He said: “I think about the whole narrative of the hotel. Other than the colours and superficial elements, it’s really about the sense of movement and how people feel when they are in the space.”

The designer, who is based in Hong Kong, is currently working on major hospitality projects in Bangkok, Bali, Phuket, Hong Kong, Singapore and Provence.
