Welsh council to consider plans for £200m wellness and life science village
POSTED 11 Sep 2018 . BY Tom Walker
Work could soon begin on what has been described as one of the first developments of its kind in the world.

The £200m Llanelli Wellness and Life Science Village, planned for the Carmarthenshire coast, is set to include a wellness hotel, sports and wellbeing centre, wellness spa and primary care centre.

An outline planning application for the project will be assessed by mid-November, with preparatory works on site at Delta Lakes being earmarked for coming months.

The project’s first phase, due to open in 2021, will feature a leisure centre as part of the Wellness Hub

There will also be a Community Health Hub, housing an Institute of Life Sciences.

Other features will include a nursing home, an eco-park for outdoor learning, space for business incubation, and landscaped lakeside facilities for walking, cycling and other recreational activities.

The entire project is expected to be completed in 2023.

Carmarthenshire Council is leading the project, with Swansea University and private sector partner Sterling Health as partners.

The partnership with Swansea University will bring a significant range of education provision to the site, which is expected to include training for doctors, nurses and other professionals for the life science and health sector.

This includes collaboration with other education providers to focus on training opportunities for all levels of employment.

Sterling Health, which leads a consortium of global companies, will bring additional funding to the project.

The Wellness and Life Science Village is also due to be part-funded by the £1.3bn Swansea Bay City Deal programme of investment.

Carmarthenshire Council has also began a search for an operations manager to play a key role in the Village’s development, delivery and future management. For more details, click here.
