Vine, Earth, Air and Field: California’s Meadowood Spa ‘reflects and respects the landscape’

The Meadowood Spa at Meadowood Napa Valley in California is set to officially open on 2 November, led by director of spa & wellness Michael Conte. The new 14,000sq ft (1,300sq m) spa is part of a US$60m (€54m, £39m) renovation, which also included a renovated nine-hole golf course and redesigned guest rooms.

The spa offers an all-suite concept, designed to give guests a sense of retreat and privacy.

The resort worked closely with spa and wellness consultants Nancy Nemer of Red Cashew Inc and Anni Hood of Wellness Business Consultancy. Nemer helped with the design process, concept creation, planning and technical specification, as well as curating treatment product lines and items for the boutique, while Hood helped incorporate the idea of a wellness journey into the spa.

Each guest’s visit begins with an in-depth conversation with a spa therapist, which determines a curated treatment plan.

The spa is using Caudalie, Luzern Laboratories, Glycelene and Aromatherapy Associates products, as well as HydraFacial MD treatments. The team has created six spa packages to reflect Napa Valley, including From the Vines, a vino-based massage and facial, and From the Garden, a treatment that will change ingredients seasonally.

The spa includes two relaxation gardens – one for women and one for men – and each features sitting areas, steam room and sauna and mineral soaking pool.

Designed by architect Howard Backen and his team at Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects, led by David Macneill and interior designer Leslie Hemmings, the style of architecture “reflects and respects the landscape,” the company said, with simple, rustic-modern structures with natural elements flowing throughout. The colour palette includes warm greys and browns, deep muted olive green, rustic black and natural flax textured linen.

A majestic oak tree is preserved and celebrated at the spa’s entrance, with a hand-forged circular iron fence guarding its perimeter and flanked on both sides by two boutiques.

The reception area features warm oak flooring, reclaimed wood beams, hand-applied textural plaster and a fireplace with hand-forged steel. The space offers simple, clean upholstered furniture covered in organic linens, earthy leather and warm, natural rustic pieces.

Special local and international artisanal touches include a silk rug from Tibet, handmade pottery from Napa Valley ceramic artist Emil Yanos, and Shibori Rust Silk wall hangings from artist Patricia Vivod.

The eight treatment suites, each of which includes a private bathroom and steam shower, offer a built-in seating lounge area filled with cushions and pillows situated in front of large sliding windows that open out to forested views, designed to heighten the sense of complete relaxation.

The spa also includes a 350sq ft (32.5sq m) Spa Boutique and Estate Boutique, which offer skincare, cosmetic and spa products alongside gifts of leather, cashmere, felted wool, pottery and pearls.

A spa menu offers healthy options mirroring the spa’s treatment menu – vine, earth, air and field – and guests can enjoy a meal in the relaxation gardens.
