Hot topic: menopause… and its link to ageing skin
10 May 2022

What used to be a taboo subject has recently emerged as a topic openly discussed everywhere from the doctor’s office to the dinner table.

As 50 per cent of the global population will experience menopause, it’s important to know not only how it can affect a woman’s body – including hot flashes, weight gain, insomnia, irritability and…even skin ageing – but what can be done to tackle the symptoms.

Wrinkles, jowls and dull skin are often part of the package because, during menopause, there’s a decrease in the production of estrogen and this can lead to the loss of collagen in the skin.

As collagen decreases, the skin loses its tightness and becomes more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Given that 30 per cent of skin collagen may be lost in the first five years after menopause, it’s important to act quickly and decisively.

What steps can be taken?

Nowadays, Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is something more and more women are considering to tackle menopause symptoms. But there are other options aside from medical intervention, particularly when it comes to addressing collagen loss in the skin.

First of all, living a healthy lifestyle is key; limiting smoking, alcohol and sugar intake, and reducing exposure to UV rays. But a consistent skincare routine can be a major help too.

Collagen facials and skincare

Swissline, the Swiss skincare brand with more than 30 years’ experience, is known as a collagen expert.

With skin biology and skin-identical ingredients driving product development – and the skin’s innate recovery potential key to its brand philosophy – it’s no wonder Swissline places such heavy emphasis on collagen refurbishment.

Swissline takes a 360-degree approach to reinforce collagen levels in the skin.

Its skincare incorporates marine collagen, collagen-boosting peptides and mimetic growth factors with clinically proven positive effects on improving density, plumpness and reducing lines.

Beyond its at-home products, the brand also offers cabin-only treatment films scoring 92 per cent pure collagen (an industry record!).

The treatments can be offered in conjunction with ultrasound devices, applied post-procedure, or used on their own to boost skin repair and recovery.
