AZA speaks out after poachers kill captive white rhino for horn

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has condemned the actions of poachers who broke into a zoo just outside of Paris and killed a white rhino for its horn.

The rhino horn which was taken in the French attack at Thoiry Zoo, could be worth as much as £35,000 (US$42,000, €40,000) when sold illegally on the black market. The incident is thought to be the first incident of poaching from a living animal in captivity in Europe.

“What occurred at the Thoiry Zoo is an unspeakable crime of animal cruelty and a barbarous act that AZA and its members condemn at the highest levels,” said Dan Ashe, AZA president and CEO.

“AZA-accredited zoos around the world are working to conserve all species of rhinoceros for future generations, so any loss is impactful.

“Zoos and aquariums accredited by AZA take the safety and protection of the animals in their care very seriously, especially that of rhinoceros and elephants. They work closely with their local law enforcement partners to assure their current security protocols meet the needs of the facility. AZA members are also actively involved in raising public awareness regarding wildlife trafficking and the devastating impact it is having on species.”

The white rhino is an endangered species, with only around 21,000 still living worldwide – mainly in South Africa and Uganda. Many zoos worldwide have responded to the shocking incident by bolstering security, increasing patrols to avoid any similar incidents.

“Our thoughts are with the staff at Thoiry Zoo, and it is our sincere hope the poacher or poachers are brought to swift justice for their horrible crime,” said Ashe.
