Edinburgh’s Butterfly & Insect World is now home to two new arrivals, baby Japanese painted quails.
Born at the visitor attraction in late August, the two tiny quails, which currently measure just 6cm high, are healthy and well. Entertaining staff already, the chicks have been described as fluffy and yellow, just like little chicks!
Unfortunately, mum has rejected the babies so staff at Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World have taken on the parental role of feeding them daily, making sure they are comfortable among bedding in their little box and keeping them warm on a heated mat.
Originating from East Asia, the quails can grow up to 20cm in height by the age of six weeks and have a life expectancy of two to two and a half years. The two new arrivals will join the family of other Japanese and Chinese painted quails at the visitor attraction.
Andrew McDonald, general manager at the Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World, said: “We are delighted with our new arrivals and are looking forward to when they can run around the hot house! The staff are doing everything they can to make sure they are well looked after in their early stages.”
