LA residents back 2024 Olympic push
POSTED 24 Feb 2016 . BY Matthew Campelli
Mayor Eric Garcetti said the IOC could have 'complete confidence' that LA residents would welcome the Games
Almost nine in 10 residents of Los Angeles are supportive of the city’s bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

A Loyola Marymount University study found that 88 per cent of Angelenos support the bid, compared to 12 per cent opposed. Of the majority in favour, 54.4 per cent declared themselves as ‘strongly supportive’ of Los Angeles’ plans to host the flagship event.

“The Olympics are in LA’s DNA. Angelenos follow the sun every day. They are optimists, innovators and big-dreamers. They embrace hard work, progress and opportunity,” said mayor Eric Garcetti. “The International Olympic Committee (IOC) have complete confidence that if they award Los Angeles the honour of naming is the host city, they will be bringing the Games back to a city that truly loves them.”

The study – which comprised a survey of 2,425 adults in Los Angeles during January and February 2016 – found that a large proportion of those in favour cited the economic boost the Games would give to the city (31.4 per cent) and the fact that a lot of jobs would be created as a result (18 per cent).

Of those against, 21.5 per cent said they were worried about added traffic, 20 per cent were concerned about the cost of hosting the Games, while 17 per cent said there were “more important things to focus on”.

“Public support for LA 2024’s Olympic and Paralympic Games bid is a very strong indication that Angelenos have confidence in our fiscally responsible, sustainable and innovative plan for the Games,” added LA 2024 chair Casey Wasserman.

“Angelenos’ overwhelming support is consistent across all ages, all demographics and all the diverse cultures in LA, reaffirming our multicultural, multi-ethnic city’s backing for bringing the Olympic Games to Los Angeles and to the United States for the first time in 28 years.”
