Serenbe sustainable living community to develop wellness hamlet
POSTED 10 Nov 2014 . BY Helen Andrews

The sustainable community called Serenbe outside Georgia's capital Atlanta, US, is developing a new ‘hamlet’ focused on wellness and healthy living, with special assisted-living services for older adults.

With its organic farm and land-use plan that encourages conservation of agricultural land, Serenbe is a real estate development that preserves and invests in agricultural land use. Owned by Serenbe – and founded by Steve and Marie Nygren – the first house in the existing community of two hamlets was built in 2004, and according to the urban village’s website, more than 400 people currently reside there.

Developed by the Homeowners Association and the community of Serenbe, the new hamlet called Mado Hamlet is being designed to attract a broad target market of singles and families interested in living well at all ages. The name ‘Mado’ is a Creek Indian word for life in balance, according to a spokesperson for Serenbe.

The groundbreaking will happen this quarter and the first 60 homes are expected to be completed in 2015. More than US$500m (€403m, £106m) is being invested in this development.

The new wellness hamlet will feature a boutique hotel, a resort destination spa and wellness centre, medical offices for eastern and western techniques, a multi-purpose health centre to integrate all medical and wellness needs of residents – including “senior” social clubs. Infrastructure will feature living sections for people aged 55 and older. These will include communal homes or groupings with live-in nurses, as a gateway to assisted living. The ageing community will be well looked after at a memory care centre, community pool, fitness centre and yoga/Pilates school.

For children, the Montessori school will take on pupils up to the age of 14.

“Serenbe is modelled after ‘real towns’ with different architecture styles,” said a spokesperson for Serenbe. “We have an architectural collaborative team for Mado consisting of Lew Oliver, Rhinehart Pulliam & Co, L. Mitchell Ginn & Associates and Residential Design Studio.”

“We believe living well at all ages is about living in harmony with nature and finding your place in a community,” Steve Nygren, founder of Serenbe told Spa Opportunities. “We work every day to create a sense of place for those who want to grow, live and thrive.

“With our recent commercial additions and announcements – and more coming in the future – the Serenbe community continues to be inspired by the past, focused on the present and poised for smart, steady growth in the future,” Nygren added.
