The Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) has launched a new training facility at Lilleshall national sports centre in Shropshire, which allows members of the Great Britain Archery Team to train in outdoor conditions, while remaining undercover.
As the majority of archery competitions are outside, the team needed to train outdoors, regardless of the weather.
Achieving planning permission at such an historical site could have proved problematic, so a temporary building has been created, designed by its manufacturers, Spaciotempo, to blend in with the rural surroundings.
The aluminium framed shelter allows two archers to stand side by side and shoot targets up to 90 metres away.
GNAS performance unit coordinator, Gary Carr, says: “The new unit is an expansion of our existing indoor training facility. It allows our Olympic, Paralympic and junior athletes to develop their shooting accuracy under conditions they would expect in competitive tournaments, the majority of which are outdoor.”
This year the British team has won more medals at major tournaments than ever before, with the men and ladies Recurve teams taking silver and bronze at the World Championships.
