Research commissioned by VisitBritain and supported by the Spa Business Association and the British International Spa Association, has revealed that consumers would welcome a new accreditation scheme for UK spas.
The qualitative study was designed to assess consumers’ needs, understanding, awareness and experience of spas in the UK.
The results highlighted a need for a method of comparing spas and will consequently be used to develop an accreditation scheme.
A pilot version could be launched as early as next year, with a view to rolling out a programme around the country in early 2007.
The research showed that the main motivation for visiting spas was to relax and unwind from work and everyday life pressures.
The most important aspects to assess in a standards scheme were identified as cleanliness, helpfulness of staff and noise levels.
Overall, instead of a ratings system based on 1-5 stars – like in the hotel industry – the majority instead favoured a scheme where spas would be required to fulfil a set of standards in order to be accredited. Details: www.spaassociation.co.uk
