Angela Sarkis makes YMCA history as the first woman to be appointed national secretary in the charity’s 160-year lifespan.
Now heading up the 6,000-strong team of staff and volunteers at YMCA England, Sarkis began her career working in the Probation Service, has worked with vulnerable young people as director of the DIVERT Trust, and was a founding member of the Social Exclusion Unit. Her most recent role was chief executive of the Church Urban Fund.
Awarded a CBE in 2000 for services in alleviating poverty, Sarkis is currently a BBC Governor and serves on the Future of Volunteering Commission and House of Lords Appointments Commission.
