You say “Lidos” - I say “Lidos”
31 Oct 2007 . BY
 /
There was a time when to be “in the swim”, you had to be at a Lido.

In the 1930s, 170 were built in our towns and cities. They were stylish, elegant, flamboyant - a Venetian concept, hence the confusion of pronunciation.

The Germans took to the idea ahead of Britain, promoting open air exercise for all. It was the first time all classes came together without distinction; the bathing costume was a great leveler; and then, indoor pools had first and second pools.

Here today in 2007, we are trying again to promote a healthy life style that is accessible for everyone.

What happened to Lidos? Many fell into disrepair, but Tinside in Plymouth and the Jubilee Pool in Penzance are enjoying a return to their former glory. The Jubilee is a 1935 Art Deco pearl – a rare antique in its own right , with its unique shape, colour, its view of the sea.

Local lobbying successfully saved these glorious facilities which for the more hardy can be used every day – and one Sheila Reynolds has done just that in Penzance every day for 40 years!

As ISPAL lobbies government for the better facilities we need, is there a future for Lidos? There’s no doubt that a lido can meet today’s needs. Its specific style contributes to a family fun occasion, and may help develop social skills and good behaviour; Lido advocates even claim that they provide a “spiritual and mentally uplifting experience” and thus a community service!

Any members have experiences and views to share? Can Lidos be part of the cost effective range of solutions the nation seeks, toward the healthy living goals?
