For many members, cold plunges are a one-time “bucket list” experience rather than a sustainable therapeutic regimen
– Steve Kuzara, director of engineering, Am-Finn

US sauna and steamroom manufacturer Am-Finn Sauna and Steam has created a contrast therapy room called Frost Locker for a controlled cooling experience.

In response to both operator demand and recent medical studies, Am-Finn’s Frost Locker offers a cool experience that does not rely on extreme temperatures for cold shock therapy.

The target temperature for the Frost Locker is approximately -1.6 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

Steve Kuzara, Am-Finn’s director of engineering, told Spa Business, “Any lower, it would discourage a large percentage of the population from using it on a regular basis. Extreme temperatures create stress rather than promote wellness.

“Many spas are beginning to phase out cold plunges,” added Kuzara. “The reasons align with what we’ve observed in the US fitness industry firsthand: sanitation challenges, liability concerns, ongoing maintenance burdens, and – perhaps most telling – very low long-term usage. For many members, cold plunges are a one-time “bucket list” experience rather than a sustainable therapeutic regimen.”

Kuzara continued: “What may ultimately prove to be the most significant turning point, however, is the growing body of clinical evidence suggesting that mild, controlled cold exposure may be more effective – and far safer – than the extreme cold shock promoted by cold plunge and cryotherapy manufacturers.”

Am-Finn cites clinical studies by specialists: Gezahegn MD, Morwenna MSc, Tipton, PhD, Karovic MD, Brazaitis et al.

There is no limitation in terms of the size of Frost Locker Am-Finn can build. The smallest Frost Locker Am-Finn produces is 1.2 square metres, which accommodates two people at a time. The retail price for a Frost Locker of this size is around US$18,000 (€16,600, £14,200).

A larger Frost Locker for 15 people would cost approximately US$40,000 (€36,800, £31,600).

The Frost Locker is in full production, for sale in the US, with plans in motion to supply European spas by Q3 of 2026.
