Rather than functioning as a standalone facility, the centre has been conceived as an extension of the hotel’s relationship with northern Tenerife: its landscape, climate and pace of life

Gran Hotel Taoro in northern Tenerife, Spain, has completed the final phase of its three-year renovation with the debut of its Sandára Wellness Centre.

The 199-key property originally opened in 1890 and it has been transformed into a five-star retreat by the Island Council of Tenerife (Cabildo Insular de Tenerife). The hotel is managed by My Way Hotels and Resorts.

The new Sandára Wellness Centre is a holistic spa with panoramic views over the Orotava Valley. The architecture for the centre was designed by Virgilio Gutiérrez and Eustaquio Martínez, the designers in charge of the hotel’s full transformation. Interiors are by Dishot.

The design reflects the island’s volcanic landscape, combining natural mineral tones, materials and organic textures to create a calm softly-lit space.

Facilities

There are three single treatment rooms and two double rooms. Treatment beds were supplied by Nilo Spa Design.

There is also a sauna and Turkish bath, supplied by Klafs, as well as experience showers that overlook the hotel’s botanical gardens.

The relaxation area opens onto views of the landscape and a bespoke mural by Canarian artist Ione Domínguez roots the spa in its island location.

There is also a space for outdoor movement classes and a Technogym fitness suite.

The spa’s management software is Siana by Spalopia.

Mari Carmen Hernandez, Sandára Wellness Centre Director, told Spa Business: “The opening of the Sandára Wellness Centre represents the final phase of Gran Hotel Taoro’s restoration, introducing a dedicated environment for holistic wellbeing that is fully integrated into the character of the destination. Rather than functioning as a standalone facility, the centre has been conceived as an extension of the hotel’s relationship with northern Tenerife: its landscape, climate and pace of life. Drawing on the island’s volcanic origins, the design and treatment philosophy work together to create a deeply sensory experience for guests.

“The result is a deliberately holistic approach. Personalised treatments are supported by therapeutic and movement-based practices, including outdoor yoga and Pilates and a high-specification gym, allowing guests to engage with wellbeing in a way that is both structured and intuitive. The wellness centre not only offers a serene escape but it also influences how guests connect with Tenerife itself, offering a more balanced, restorative and place-led understanding of the destination.”

Treatments

French skincare company Anne Semonin has partnered with the wellness centre. Treatments begin with a skin consultation, which is followed by therapies adapted to suit individual guests’ needs.

The menu includes facials for hydration, decongestion and rejuvenation. Advanced protocols are available too, such as those incorporating cryotherapy, firming serums plus customised oil and mineral complexes.

The brand is also offering a range of body treatments, such as exfoliating therapies, wraps and firming rituals. The massage options range from bioenergetic practices, Balinese and Ayurvedic services to physiotherapy and prenatal massage.

The signature treatment is the Canarian Hot Stones Ritual, which uses local ingredients like banana oil and volcanic stones. The price for this 90-minute ritual starts at €150 (US$171, £129).

Other facilities

Prior to the wellness centre’s debut, the hotel launched two restaurants called Oka and Lava, both of which are led by Michelin-starred chefs Ricardo Sanz and Erlantz Gorostiza.
