The restoration of Le Grand Hotel Inter-continental and Le Café de la Paix in Paris, costing over 106 million euros, has begun with a target re-opening date of April 2003. The main objective of the project, instigated by owner Six Continents Hotels, is to reinstate Le Grand's identity, 'bringing the hotel's past and present lifestyles together' and becoming a 'top luxury hotel', the Hotel de l'Opéra. New facilities in the hotel, originally inaugurated on 5 May 1862 by Empress Eugénie, will include luxury apartments and suites, rooms and an elevator for disabled guests, 1000sq m of floor space 'bathed in daylight', a spa and a new layout for the Café de la Paix. Reception room facilities will increase to 20 rooms giving a total capacity area of 2,200sq metres of space, 'unrivalled' anywhere in Paris according to Six Continents. For the duration of the renovation work, the management says it will remain committed to the open-term contracts of its 500 employees.
