American hotel chain Cendant is launching its Howard Johnson brand in the UK with 68 serviced apartments in Bristol. The one and two bedroom apartments, which open this month, each have a fully-fitted kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom. Cendant hopes to appeal to the business market and attract travellers needing to stay for longer periods by being cheaper than hotels. The service does not provide an on-site restaurant or bar, but all facilities including phone bills, and home comforts such as a television, CD player and hairdryer, are part of the nightly rate. A manager is on call 24 hours a day, and local restaurants deliver to the apartments. Rates start at £50 per apartment per night, depending on the duration of stay. Cedant plan to roll-out the Howard Johnson serviced apartments brand throughout 2002. By the end of the year, apartments will be open in Dublin, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, London, Reading and Glasgow.
