English Heritage publishes 2014 register for at risk sites
POSTED 24 Oct 2014 . BY Tom Anstey
Eastbourne Pier was added to the list after a catastrophic fire in July
English Heritage has added more than 660 sites to its “at risk” register, which covers sites in danger of being lost through neglect, decay or inappropriate development.

The list of endangered sites now totals 5,752, a third of which have been on the list since it was started in 1999. Notable additions include Eastbourne Pier in Sussex, which was partially destroyed by fire in July; Geevor Tin Mine in Cornwall and Shipwreck Hazardous – an 18th Century warship beached on UK shores during a storm in 1706.

The 2014 Register is the most comprehensive to date, with listed buildings, places of worship, industrial sites, scheduled monuments and archaeology, conservation areas, parks and gardens, protected wrecks and battlefields all included.

"We have no quick solutions, which is why it's so important for us to work with owners, members of the public and volunteer groups to protect our heritage sites in England," said English Heritage’s regional director Greg Luton.

“Members of the public can help to prevent sites from becoming at risk or help sites that are already established as at risk by getting in touch with their local history groups - often at risk sites will also have volunteer groups.”
