Organising committee gets to work on Beijing 2022 Olympics
POSTED 21 Dec 2015 . BY Tom Walker
Beijing will utilise many of the 2008 venues - such as the Watercube - during the 2022 Winter Games
The Organising Committee of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics has officially begun its work – five months after the Chinese capital was chosen to host the Games.

Headed by Guo Jinlong, the Communist Party Secretary of Beijing, the committee will be responsible for all aspects of hosting and will work closely with the International Olympic Committee in the run up to 2022.

Beijing is the first city to have successfully bid to organise both Summer and Winter Olympics, after it hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.

The 2022 Games will rely heavily on existing venues, including those built for the 2008 Games, such as the iconic Bird’s Nest stadium and the Water Cube aquatics centre.

While the Bird’s Nest will be used for the opening and closing ceremonies, the Water Cube will be turned into the “Ice Cube” and host curling and skating events.

The city’s proposed budget for investment in Olympic villages, sports venues and other infrastructure totals US$1.5bn (€1.37bn, £960m) – significantly less than for Olympic Games in the past.

According to the bid documents, Chinese organisers plan to offset the proposed operational budget by revenue from ticket sales, marketing sponsorships and other income. The IOC will also inject around US$880m (€802m, £563m) to support the staging of the Games.

The committee has also confirmed that one of the new venues to be used during 2022 – the 12,000-seater National Speed Skate Stadium – will be open in 2016 to athletes and the public as part of “pre-Games legacy” plans.

Located west of the city’s Olympic Park, the arena will house skating tracks as long as 400m, and will host long and medium distance speed skating during the 2022 Games.
