Six Flags provides parks and employee updates following Mexico earthquake

Six Flags has provided an update on its Mexico theme parks following this week’s devastating earthquake, with all of its employees safe and accounted for but damage to both its waterpark and theme park in the region.

The new Six Flags Hurricane Harbor waterpark in Oaxtepec, which opened earlier this year, has suffered damage to a number of structures, which the operator says it's currently assessing.

“After a careful evaluation, the company will be in a better position to understand the extent of the damage, develop a remediation plan and assess when the waterpark will reopen,” said a statement.

Damage to Six Flags’ theme park in Mexico City is minimal, according to the operator, which is currently in the process of evaluating all rides and structures in the park, which will not reopen until the company “is entirely satisfied after a thorough safety review.”

“Six Flags extends heartfelt thoughts and prayers to its employees and to all those impacted by the earthquake,” added the statement.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake, which is responsible for at least 230 deaths, has caused widespread destruction across the country’s capital this week and is the second to happen this month after an 8.1 magnitude earthquake killed at least 90 in the south of Mexico. While closed, both parks are being used as collection centres for people to donate food, water and medical supplies.
