Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts is to open its first-ever resort in Malayasia following the unveiling of plans for a Angsana-branded luxury spa resort on the shores of Penang.

The site is to be located on 3.2 hectares of land at Teluk Bahang, which will house three main buildings with approximately 300 sea-facing rooms and suites.

The resort’s developers, Senja Aman Group, are also planning a 1,100sq m (11,840 sq ft) spa complete with 12 treatment rooms, which will sit alongside three swimming pools and five food and beverage outlets.

The Asanga spa will also house 2,000 square feet (186sq m) of retail space focusing on wellness, anti-aging and rejuvenation offerings for guests.

The development is to draw inspiration from the principles of Peranakan Nyonya Baba culture.

Both its architectural and interior design will make use of intricate floral and geometric patterns in order to help pay tribute to Penang’s status as an environmentally friendly UNESCO world heritage destination.

The resort will be home to 150 two-bedroom luxury suites, which are being offered up for sale, allowing guests use of the site for 60 days each year.

The Asanga resort will also adhere to the principles of EarthCheck Sustainable Design Standards, with its owners hoping that the site will become a leading sustainable business in Malayasia.
