David Chipperfield Architects win competition to rejuvenate Munich’s iconic Haus der Kunst museum
POSTED 10 Sep 2013 . BY Chris Dodd
The Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts and Haus der Kunst have announced that David Chipperfield Architects has won the final round of the competitive tender process for the renovation of the Haus der Kunst art museum, one of Munich’s most iconic and controversial architectural landmarks.

David Chipperfield's record in renovating museum buildings within an international context was given as a major reason for the choice. The jury charged with the decision also recognised the practice's analytical and open approach to the project, which will allow solutions to be developed in collaboration with all affiliated partners and said: "David Chipperfield Architects has given significant consideration to exploring Haus der Kunst’s relationship with its surrounding urban spaces including the nearby English Garden park and has also taken into account the museum’s programme in connection with its future use."

The selection of the architectural firm marks the start of the planning phase and the preparation of a budget proposal, which will be submitted to the Bavarian State Parliament for approval. It's thought renovation work could begin sometime in 2015 or 2016.

"Once again, a leading world architect will work on an architectural commission in Bavaria, which will further enrich our cultural landscape," said Dr Wolfgang Heubisch, Bavarian State Minister of Science, Research and the Arts.

"Outstanding references in the field of museums and public building, as well as international experience in the renovation and restoration of important architectural monuments, are the best conditions for a successful collaboration."

Originally opened in 1937, the museum was planned as the first large-scale building representative of the Third Reich and played host to an annual exhibition of German art for a number of years.

After the second world war, the museum became the responsibility of the United States military who temporarily occupied the building. Over time, Haus der Kunst has developed into an internationally renowned centre for contemporary art and is now recognised for its innovative exhibitions and programmes open to the public.
