The Bannatyne Group will pump £1m (US$1.3m, €1.1m) into refurbishing its newly-acquired Humberston health club in North East Lincolnshire, which it bought from Virgin Active.

The health club, which offers more than 2,500 members exercise facilities, an indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, bowling green, 9-hole golf course and a lounge and café bar, will add a spa to its offering.

The group plans “significant investment” in the gym floor, which will be revamped with Technogym equipment and a functional training area. The changing rooms will be enlarged as well as upgraded and the spa will provide relaxation and wellbeing treatments. Renovation work has started with immediate effect.

Virgin confirmed the sale of the club in mid-August.

Members have been transferred to the Bannatyne Group, with the club being renamed Bannatyne Humberston.

“We are committed to bringing equipment and facilities that are of the highest standard, to help members achieve their fitness, health and wellbeing goals more effectively and the new spa is essential to support our aim to deliver a quality holistic health and wellbeing service,” said Justin Musgrove, Bannatyne Group chief executive.

“The exciting investment in the gym, spa and changing rooms will greatly enhance the health club without compromising the country club atmosphere that members enjoy so much.”
