Jeremy McCarthy unveils Mandarin Oriental’s new wellness initiative dedicated to fostering strength
POSTED 28 Jan 2021 . BY Megan Whitby
Jeremy McCarthy, Mandarin Oriental's group director of spa and wellness
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has extended its Inner Strength – Outer Strength wellness initiative to encompass guests across all its global spas.

The concept is designed to help guests use this time of disruption to create positive changes and build strength both physically and mentally.

“The adversity in 2020 has led all of us to re-prioritise personal wellness,” said Jeremy McCarthy, group director of spa and wellness.

“Developing our strength reserves during times of uncertainty is crucial to avoid illness, manage stress and be better able to support others.”

Through this initiative, hotel and spa guests can focus on their inner strength development by taking time for silence, contemplation and mindfulness, while building outer strength through boosting physical vitality with exercise, movement and healthy nutrition.

The course’s three core areas focus on: Physical Strength (Vitality), Mental Strength (Mindfulness) and Character Strength (Authenticity).

Mandarin Oriental originally launched the programme in June 2020 as a mental wellness course to support staff returning to its reopened hotel and spa destinations.

The new guest version is tailored to the specific needs of each client – all of whom will be given access to expert trainers and practitioners to help define new goals and routines, or to motivate them towards the goals they have already established.

Inner Strength – Outer Strength programming will vary at different Mandarin Oriental destinations.

Speciality offerings at include:

  • Mandarin Oriental, Macau is featuring a relaxing Inner Strength spa treatment combined with a variety of fitness classes including yoga and personal training

  • Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is pairing advanced yoga Nidra techniques such as pranayama and mantra chanting alongside intense fitness activities, including guided runs and boot camp sessions

  • Mandarin Oriental, Milan is presenting yoga and singing bowl sessions along with private AquaGym and stretching classes

  • Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech is running workshops on essential oils along with complimentary fitness assessments with its certified coach

  • Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is offering yoga and guided meditation alongside active outdoor sessions such as kayaking and hiking.

A series of remote assets such as exercises, reading recommendations and advice have also been developed to support guests unable to reach Mandarin Oriental destinations.

This service uses individual assessments to help guide people to understand which of their inner and outer strength areas need improvement.

For example, possible inner strength areas to improve include mindfulness, character strength, gratitude, resilience and willpower. Outer strength options feature muscular strength, mobility, power, endurance and breath.
