Leaders identify seven 'next steps' to take after Welsh Global Wellness Institute Roundtable

After holding the first Global Wellness Institute roundtable in Wales in July, the organisation has released key findings from what the leaders who gathered identified as key interventions to make Wales a leader in wellness among small nations.

The event attracted medical, policy and business professors and researchers from Swansea University and ABM and Hywel Dda University health boards; government dignitaries across health, social services, culture and tourism; and private- and third-sector leaders from fields as diverse as science, hospitality and the performing arts. Leisure Media CEO Liz Terry was also in attendance and
reported live from the event.

Organised by Professor Terry Stevens, an international tourism consultant, in partnership with the Institute of Life Science at Swansea University’s Medical School, this was the GWI’s second roundtable in Europe and sixth in the world.

“This represented the first time that such a wide range of sectors and disciplines came together to discuss wellness in Wales,” said Stevens.

Key interventions identified at the roundtable include:

• Train a new generation of life scientists in wellness
• Spur inter-governmental and public-private collaborations
• Embrace a comprehensive concept of wellness
• Develop wellness tourism for a world that increasingly craves what Wales offers
• Bring life science and tourism together
• Focus on everyday “settings”
• Appoint a Minister of Wellness
