London’s hotels are among the dirtiest in the world, second only to those found in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to figures published from a poll by Hotel.info.

The room reservation agent collected all of the post-stay reviews posted by guests who booked through its system, with scores being given between zero and 10.

The findings showed that Britain’s capital city offered hotels at an average cleanliness rating of 7.52 out of 10, while the Brazilian city of Rio was the dirtiest at 7.29.

The top ten list of dirtiest cities featured eight places found inside the European continent, while the other two were located in Brazil.

The opposing list of cleanest hotel offerings was made up of six European cities, three Asian and one Eurasian.

Tokyo was found to offer the cleanest hotel stays in the world with a score of 8.93, with the Polish capital Warsaw coming in second having scored 8.76.The third spot was filled by South Korea’s capital Seoul, which scored 8.73 out of 10.

Despite the alleged dirty laundry, London hotels have made a clean break from the recession to mark an impressive recovery in the past year.

Such is the demand for rooms in the capital, London offerings have been able to charge some of the highest rates in the world for a stay, while five-star offerings in the UK capital are now considered to be the most expensive across the globe.

Interest in the city has continued to boom ever since it hosted the 2012 Olympic Games, with one study suggesting that London will become the the world’s most popular tourism destination in 2014.
