Five-star wellness mountain retreat Huus Quell opened recently in Gonten, in the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland.

The 30-key hotel is the flagship of Appenzeller Huus resort. Huus Quell joins two other hotels on the property, Huus Löwen and Huus Bären.

Huus Quell is located 900 metres above sea-level, offering sweeping mountain views. In 2026, an additional 43 suites will increase the accommodation offering at the retreat.

The property has a 2,200sq m Quell Spa, which is described as a sanctuary devoted to balance, beauty and restoration. Across three floors, the facilities include 14 treatment rooms, nine pools, eight saunas and steam grottos. There is also a floating yoga platform and a longevity centre.

The longevity centre

The longevity centre at Quell Spa is the centrepiece of the facility. It is described by the property as the L3 Longevity Circle, which is a hub for biohacking technologies arranged in a structured journey.

Technologies include:

  • A Multi Cryo Hacking System (MCS) infrared cabin that offers chromo therapy, aromatherapy and has been fitted with a vibration plate, by Art of Cryo
  • A full-body cryotherapy chamber (which reaches -110 degrees Celsius) by Art of Cryo
  • Art of Cryo’s Flow System, which is a lymphatic flow and cardiovascular improvement device that applies rhythmic negative and positive pressure (-120 mbar to +40 mbar) to the body to stimulate circulation and ease tissue congestion.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • A Scaneca body scanner to analyse body shape, posture and symmetry
  • An InBody 970 device that provides data on muscle mass, fat percentage and water retention levels

Hans-Peter Veit, director of spa development and wellness for Apenzeller Huus, told Spa Business exclusively: “Our new spa at Huus Quell is a sanctuary of calm and refined tension — shaped by organic forms, natural materials and an unmistakable sense of place on three levels.

“At the same time, it offers a new dimension of high-end wellness: from the L3 Longevity Circle with its semi-transparent mirrored architecture to our three-level Multi-Sensory Lounge designed for deep sensory recalibration,” added Veit. “It’s where nature, science and modern luxury converge to create a truly next-generation spa experience.”

GOCO Hospitality consulted on the project’s design. The firm was engaged to deliver a feasibility study, the wellness concept development for the entire Appenzeller Huus destination, from positioning strategy to recommended spa and wellness service platform and detailed area program. The agreement also included design development through technical services, which comprise design workshops, sketches on the functional planning and further support through the design development process and design reviews.

Ingo Schweder, GOCO’s founder and CEO told Spa Business, “We are delighted to contribute to the broader Appenzeller Huus and Huus Quell development which reach far beyond the scope of a traditional hotel spa. We thoughtfully curated the wellness offering around the essence of the destination to be deeply rooted in cultural traditions, authentic local and regional healing rituals and experiences that are immersed in the natural serenity of Gönten and its surrounding landscapes.”

Holistic treatments

Swissline is the skincare partner and the brand is offering a combination of traditional alpine therapies as well as modern wellness treatments.

Natascha Saar, spa manager for Quell Spa described why Swissline was chosen as a partner: “Swissline represents the very same values we uphold at Huus Quell — uncompromising quality, precision and perfection down to the finest detail. The brand embodies the Swiss tradition of reliability, purity and scientific innovation — qualities that align seamlessly with our world of quiet luxury.

Developed in Switzerland, these high-performance formulas deliver visible results while nurturing a deep sense of wellbeing. Their holistic approach to beauty and rejuvenation truly resonates with the philosophy of Huus Quell.

There are four Swissline treatments on offer:

  • Swissline Collagen Pure – This is a facial that uses Swissline’s Signature Face Sculpting Massage, which was developed by World Face Massage Champion Anna Tsankova. This lifting therapy hydrates the skin using the brand’s 92 per cent Pure Collagen Face Films. The treatment costs 360 CHF (US$404, €373, £320) and lasts 100 minutes.
  • Swissline Oxygen – This therapy is described as an antidote to urban stressors. The brand says the treatment reactivates the skin’s oxygen metabolism and enhances its capacity to absorb nutrients and maintain a healthy glow. Products from the Cell Shock Age Intelligence range are used during this treatment. It lasts 75 minutes and costs 290 CHF (US$300, €300, £300).
  • Swissline Lifting Infusion – This is a firming treatment for the face, neck and décolleté that uses marin collagen, hyaluronic acid and two types of green tea. The therapy lasts 75 minutes and costs 290 CHF (US$300, €300, £300).
  • Swissline Sparkling Eyes – This treatment involves an eye massage, the application of two targeted eye masks and the use of eye rollers to rejuvenate delicate skin around the eyes and reduce puffiness. The therapy lasts 50 minutes and costs 180 CHF (US$200, €190, £160).
